shortlist for the UK Publishing Entrepreneur Award 2008, and have included Tom
Chalmers, Managing Director of Legend Press, for the second consecutive year.
Legend Press is the UK\'s youngest-run mainstream fiction publisher, specialising in
cutting-edge contemporary work, including both literary and commercial ranges.
Founded by Tom Chalmers in 2005, the company\'s profile is rapidly growing with
intentions to double their list year-on-year until 2009. Using a mix of innovation,
drive and passion, Legend Press is fast showing that they can set the bar as to what
can be achieved in a short space of time and with limited resources.
The award is targeted at transitional and developing economies and celebrates and
champions the notion of creative entrepreneurship - specifically the need to
identify and nurture future leaders of the publishing industry in these markets.
Launched in 2007, it seeks to further stimulate the development of the UK publishing
industry in an international business context. The aim is to find the most talented
young entrepreneurs working in the UK's publishing industry, and give them the
chance to find out more about what is happening out there, by becoming part of the
British Council's international network of young creative entrepreneurs.
From a shortlist, the winner and two runners-up will be invited to take part in a
specially designed and tailored tour of Argentina's publishing industry. The tour
(to take place later in the year) will provide a real insight into one of the most
developed and fastest-growing Spanish-speaking publishing markets.
The winner will be announced at London Book Fair (together with the winner of the
International Young Publishing Entrepreneur IYPE award 08), on Wednesday 16 April.
The winner will also attend the British Book Industry Awards on the final night of
The Booksellers Association conference in Brighton on 13 May 2008.
On being shortlisted, Tom commented: \"I'm delighted to be shortlisted again for the
Young Publisher Award. Last year was a great experience and the award is testament
to the many dynamic people striving to drive publishing forward during a period of
unprecedented change. We are always excited at Legend Press to be put forward for
these awards as they illustrate that, although in such a challenging environment, we
are constantly taking steps in the right direction as we look to be one of the
driving forces in the independent publishing sector."
